How Do You Carve A Freehand Pipe?
I still have a lot to learn about pipes, so I hesitate to give any instructions on how to make a pipe. I sculpt my pipes by hand using only the highest quality materials, the best plateau bruyère and well-dried Montenegrin olive wood. Since my experience with pipe making is limited to a handful of briar pipes, mostly freehand, I will stick to briar when describing the materials needed.
If you like making pipes, you will eventually want to drill your blocks (on a pole drill or lathe) and even make your own stems, but I'll start with a pre-drilled briar block. My son sculpted three pipes, and I sculpted one, all with hand tools, except for the tampon. Before Bayer starts carving one of the roughly 300 pipes he's carving this year, he fully seasons his rose hips with a special substance he's developed to remove impurities from the wood. It cuts channels and holes in the briar, giving the overall shape of the tube the appearance of tiny earthen bridges or beautifully open briar paths.
When creating a pipe by hand, Eric Nording tries to follow the texture as much as possible, making creative choices by addressing the natural imperfections of the wood. The final step in completing his pipe is to match the shape and style of the pipe to a compatible mouthpiece. Pipe carving is a subtle but precise art that fully reflects the personality of the pipe maker in his work. In short, after about 12 hours of work, I was holding my first pipe, a Danish plateau style free hand (i.e. the style of various Ben Wades and Preben Holm, which are among the favorites of my small collection.
I have found that my homemade pipe is made from the best briar I have and will burst and smoke like you would expect from any good hand-bounced Dane. Bayer sees briar pipe carving as an art form and his whole carving philosophy is that I approach each pipe project as if I were creating a beautiful sculpture. Even some of the standard shapes I make are unique and I don't use models when creating the pipes. I have developed a method of modeling a pipe based on some simple hand tools, the following components are the information I want to have when making my first pipe.
Our tools - drills and tenon turning tools - are the first of their kind to be offered to pipe manufacturers. There may be a direction of research, I suppose, in what a freehand pipe can be, even by my definition .... some cutters can "freehand" almost perfect billiards, and it would be difficult for me myself to name anyone one pipe from arms. Many beginner pipe makers do not remove enough wood from the stem-bowl passage, perhaps for fear of thinning the bowl walls too much.
