How Do You Pack A Pipe And Keep It Lit?
There are several ways to package a smoking pipe, but all methods start with filling the tobacco bowl. Pour a thin layer of tobacco into the bowl, pressing down with your thumb to create an even surface.
Holding the pipe, drip the cut tobacco into the pipe bowl until the pipe bowl is full. Begin by gently pouring the tobacco into the pipe until it fills to the rim of the bowl. Carefully fill the pipe to the top, then use the tamper to lightly tamp the tobacco. Remember to fill the pipe before pressing the tobacco.
Move the new lighter in a circular motion so that the tobacco ignites evenly. Using a lit or lit match, sweep the flame in a circular motion across the surface of the pipe tobacco, making shallow strokes on the pipe. Make sure you pack the tobacco well and pull the pipe out slowly and steadily so it doesn't catch fire. If it is difficult to draw air through the tube, then the tobacco is too tight and you will have to loosen it.
Place the remaining tobacco into the pipe, pressing it down with your thumb to create a smooth surface. There may be a little resistance this time, but if you find it difficult to suck on the pipe, pour the tobacco into the bowl and start over.
We recommend pushing the lit tobacco section back to allow the dull tobacco to catch on. What you will try to do is to pour enough tobacco into the bottom of the bowl to allow free air flow, since there are no carbohydrates in the pipe yet; and the grass on top should be packed tight enough to stay on top of it. Once you've filled your cup to perfection, just add some more tobacco on top.
To make another common stuffing method, fill a pipe bowl with tobacco and then wind a piece of wire around it until it is tight. An alternative packaging method, called the Franck method, involves lowering the tobacco slightly into the pipe, after which a large cork is carefully inserted into the bowl all at once.
A tamper is a blunt instrument, usually shaped like the point of a nail; the flat end serves to compress the tobacco when packing the bowl and to grind the ash to facilitate re-ignition. While you can push the tobacco deeper into the pipe with your finger or the back of your lighter, the tamper will look much cleaner and cleaner. A plectrum is a narrow needle that can be used to clear debris from the leg or to aerate well-packed tobacco (because it is sharp and can scratch the bowl of the pipe, it should not be used for scraping).
